“Tsinghua is a sacred place for learning in my heart. The TIEMBA program has taught me a lot about globalization and has given me the opportunity to engage in many diverse cultural exchanges. I am fortunate to have spent two years here.”
——Wang Ludan

The First Chinese Recognized in Global Captive Industry

Many people may not have a clear idea about captive and mutual insurance, and this is the exact reason that Wang Ludan passionately devotes himself to this industry. “Captive refers to an insurance company established by a company or organization to minimize its own risks. Mutual is a non-for-profit insurance organization covering specific group of insured with similar exposures. Compared with ordinary commercial insurance companies, their customer base is specific.”

As the Assistant General Manager of Willis Towers Watson, Wang was listed as one of the “One to Watch” finalists in the latest issue of the “Power 50” special issue of the 2017 captive magazine Captive Review. “Power 50” is the most important selection of Captive Review of the year, and it selects the most influential experts and industry leaders in the global captive industry. Wang Ludan represented Chinese persons that made the first time to the finalist. In this regard, Wang believes this achievement is beyond personal; it rather holds great meaning to the industry. As the world's second largest economy, China accounts for more than one hundred of the World's Top 500 companies. The captive and mutual industry is growing at a fast pace; however its presence in China is still at its infancy.

Before enrolling in the TIEMBA program, Wang was mainly engaged in natural resources industries and Chinese investment overseas. World-wide spreading customers allowed him to come into contact with captive and mutual industry earlier than peers, ensuing devoted the majority of his energy to this sector. "The biggest value of this finalist is to attract the attention of the market. More participants are willing to join in the promotion and development of the industry. The concept of captive was officially introduced to China in 2013, mutual in 2015. The future market potential is enormous.”

Resounding Brand, International Knowledge

Working in a foreign company, serving state-owned enterprises and government agencies gave Wang Ludan more reasons to enroll in an English-taught EMBA program at a Chinese university. Further, since the insurance service industry faced complicated problems and customers of many different kinds, Wang considered it ever more important to continue learning in an environment that advocates diversity. “The reputation of the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SEM) as well as the alumni community greatly attracted me. If I was going to apply, I would apply for the best,”. Taking into consideration all the above, Wang Ludan eventually chose Tsinghua and started his journey with TIEMBA.

"The difficulty and depth of the courses were beyond my expectations. Everyone puts great efforts in" said Wang “Having checked with different EMBA programs, there is probably no one as tough as TIEMBA”. In the end, it was exactly the difficulties and challenges of the courses that helped Wang learn and grow.

Wang was most impressed by the ways in which leadership development was a big focus throughout the whole program, with each student assigned to a small group. This mechanism helped students not only to better bond with one another, but also cultivated ability to work in teams. Each group was accompanied by a coach that guided and offered advice to team members throughout their studies. Since each student stayed in his or her group from the beginning to the end of the program, members were able to form deep relationships, said Wang. “I was very fortunate to have been assigned to my LDP group. I believe the same feeling is shared by everyone of cohort.”

We Learn by Working Hard alongside Wise People

“Spending time with people who aim high will always bring yourself progress.”

When asked about the biggest impact the TIEMBA program has given him, Wang Ludan referred to the great improvements he gained by spending time with his wise and diligent peers for two years. Tsinghua’s reputation appeals leaders from all countries and industries, and when people get together, it is a process of mutual stimulation and inspiration. In addition, these cross-cultural exchanges allowed Wang to reflect upon his own view of China. “I didn’t only learn about other regions and industries in the world, but given these opportunities I was able to reflect on China’s own market and policies.” Wang Ludan said, everyone discussed the openness of China's financial market, professors and students from different countries had distinct views and understandings. Being receptive to all perspectives allowed Wang to grow and become more capable to explore problems independently and not be indoctrinated by only one angle.

“Everyone was very willing to communicate and share,” said Wang. “A small discussion at tea break may provoke something inspirational, cohort would doodle on the blackboard to present their ideas, and discuss further.” Wise people exchange thoughts, everyone gets wiser.

Intensive Workload Bonds People Together

In order to provide a better globalized view and learning environment, TIEMBA divides into several modules in different countries, to give diversified new experiences to students. Wang Ludan recalled one time that they were in Singapore, everyone had to prepare for exam next day. After midnight, all the students were still working in a classroom, "It was 1 or 2 am, you can see people engaging in intense discussions by different languages, French, English, Chinese... Diverse backgrounds makes discussions complementary to each other."

The process was tiring but everyone was happy. Everyone would cheer each other and tell each other "I love you." Wang was deeply moved by the enthusiasm, focusing on a common goal sharing by people from very difference backgrounds. Work hard, play harder. Tough work bonds people together, friendship extended to after-class with gatherings and parties. Wang finds an interesting thing, foreigners were not as energetic as Chinese think to take intense classes after burning night. “Lot of people are taking supplements.”

“There is nothing to be sad about. I look forward to the future.” Upon graduation, Wang Ludan said that the TIEMBA program has brought him a lot of things. “I firmly believe that the friendship, growth, and experience gained during his time at TIEMBA will not end here; graduation is another start.” More than 400 TIEMBA alumni and students from more than 40 countries around the world currently work in 29 countries. Wang said, if someone arrived in London today, then he or she could immediately find a classmate to catch up. In any part of the world, Africa, Middle East, South America, even South Pole, we may encounter alumni who have studied in TIEMBA, said Wang. “It is a natural sense of belonging.”

Always Being Curious, Always Keep Learning

This is the philosophy that Wang Ludan always upholds. He feels that, it is more important to keep curiosity and enthusiasm, to keep inner peace after all the efforts, than struggling on which direction to take. Many people expect changes by taking an EMBA program, to find a good job, to take a leap on career, or concur the bottleneck. Wang thinks it is better to be relaxing to make a choice, every three to five years, you have to review your knowledge, to categorize and refine. “If I can learn simply for keeping learning, the gain would be different.”

Another gauge is your understanding and planning for future. “To me, globalization of China is a sure trend, with this judgment, the criteria are crystal to pick up EMBA program.” Wang Ludan emphasized that “It is not important which project you choose, while taking immediate action maters more. How much you can gain from this journey, is up to your dedication and efforts. Why, how and commitment to the choose, are more valuable in my opinion.”

“Traveling, reading, chatting with different people are some things make people happy. The value of life lies in these things.” Experiencing multiple perspectives, cultural and philosophies, is not only Wang’s interest, but also advocated by TIEMBA. “I think INSEAD is truly fulfilling its mission – The Business School for the World. During the process, everyone can experience different feelings of learning in different campuses and regions, globalization and diversification are essences of the charm. "

TIEMBA combines Tsinghua's history and dignity with INSEAD's vitality and innovation, has been cultivating batches and batches of outstanding stbudents like Wang Ludan, who never ceases to try, to learn, and always remains curiosity and strives to improve, shining on the diversified globalized platforms.
